Year 5 Viking Day
As part of our exciting topic The World of Water, we have arranged for the children to experience being a Viking invader for a day in school on Tuesday 3rd October. This will be at school and be in place of a day trip out for this term.
On this day your child will, through role-play, experience life as it would have been living in the year 878 AD at the time of the Battle of Edington, using authentic tools and materials whenever possible to learn skills as apprentices in a wide variety of workshops. A specialist teacher will join the Year 5 team from the company ‘History off the page’ to make the experience come alive.
As the day progresses, the children will get involved in the issues of the time, with the chance to participate in a range of cross-curricular activities.
In the afternoon, the children will travel forward to the present day, taking on the roles of: archaeologists, excavators, researchers and professors. They will piece together the fate of the village using dig boxes. By the end of the day, they will have a really good idea of how it felt like to be a Viking. There will also be a story-telling session.
To ensure all pupils are fully involved in the experience, we would like all pupils to dress in a Viking costume as Viking child. See the attached costume guidelines for details.
If you have any questions about the day, please do not hesitate to speak to Mrs Collis or Mrs Atherton.
Please provide consent for your child to fully participate in the day by completing the consent form below by FRIDAY 22ND SEPTEMBER.
